Promoting Equitable Access to Immigration Relief

About the Midwest Human Rights Consortium (MHRC)

The Midwest Human Rights Consortium (MHRC) is a regional referral hub that connects pro bono attorneys with qualified medical and mental-health professionals to provide trauma-informed forensic asylum evaluations for children and families navigating the U.S. immigration system.
Founded in 2019, MHRC has streamlined the evaluation request process, coordinated hundreds of referrals, and supported clients from countries around the world.
MHRC also plays a key role in training and supporting the clinician workforce, providing education, mentorship, and guidance to medical and mental health professionals who conduct forensic evaluations. To date, more than 200 clinicians have been trained through MHRC programs.
As demand grows—amid a historic immigration backlog and escalating threats to due process—MHRC is working to expand evaluator capacity, strengthen partnerships, and build sustainable infrastructure to continue meeting the urgent needs of immigrant children and families.

Why Our Work Matters

Our work ensures that the psychological impact of persecution is accurately recognized in humanitarian and asylum cases. By providing trauma-informed evaluations, we help attorneys present stronger, evidence-based arguments that reflect the true experiences of their clients.
Every survivor seeking safety carries a story shaped by trauma, violence, and displacement—yet their experiences often go unheard or undocumented in the legal process. Without clear, credible mental-health evaluations, these stories can be misunderstood or overlooked, placing individuals at risk of being returned to the very harm they fled.
