Licensure requirements?
Clinical volunteers must hold valid professional licenses in their field.
  • Asylum Medicine Training Initiative — https://asylummedtraining.org/ The course is free for health, human rights, and legal professionals based on the Istanbul Protocol. After completing the first five mandatory modules of this course, participants will be qualified to conduct forensic medical evaluations with prominent asylum medicine organizations, including Physicians for Human Rights. 
  • Join the Society of Asylum Medicine: We encourage you to join the Society of Asylum Medicine, an interprofessional community of clinicians who work with individuals seeking asylum. Their website has an excellent bibliography and library of asylum medicine and human rights literature, and they maintain an active listserv. 
It varies according to the complexity of the case and evaluator experience level.. Evaluations may take up to 10+ hours including the interview, report writing, and potential follow-up with the attorney. We work with your schedule and there’s no minimum number of cases required.
Yes, all services provided through MHRC are pro bono. We serve clients who cannot afford private evaluations, making your volunteer work critical to ensuring access to justice.
MHRC sponsors webinars and mentorship meetings to discuss cases and share knowledge.
Depending on the case, the evaluator’s licensure requirements and level of comfort and expertise, some evaluations can be conducted virtually. Administrative and coordination roles are often fully remote as well. We work with volunteers across the Midwest and beyond.
